Types of Glass for Glass Showers
In this episode Michael Cadenhead, a 46-year veteran of the glass industry, to explore the different types of glass commonly used in glass shower enclosures.
Glass showers can be categorized into two main types
Framed Glass Showers
Framed glass showers typically feature lightweight aluminum frames and thin glass. These designs require substantial mounting hardware to support the more flexible glass.
Frameless and Semi-Frameless Glass Showers
Frameless and semi-frameless glass showers are constructed using heavy, tempered glass. They require minimal hardware, which is often made of aesthetically pleasing brass in various finishes, such as chrome or black.
At Accurate Glass, we specialize in frameless and semi-frameless glass shower installation.
Types of Glass for Showers
1. Clear Glass
Clear tempered safety glass is the standard choice for most shower enclosures.
- Thickness: 3/8 inch (10 mm)
- Appearance: Greenish hue when viewed from the edge
- Cost: A typical large enclosure costs $2,000.00 –$3,000.00. Hardware choice generally does not impact the glass cost significantly.
2. Coated Glass
To enhance durability and reduce maintenance, glass can be treated with AccuShield Protective Glass Coating on both sides for an additional cost of approximately $350.00 per shower.
3. Low Iron Glass
Also known as Opti-White, Starfire, or Ultra Clear, this glass offers superior clarity by using less iron during manufacturing.
- Appearance: Aqua blue at the edges; allows more light to pass through
- Cost: Approximately 25% more than standard clear glass
- Customization: Can also have AccuShield applied
4. Extra Heavy Glass
For larger or taller enclosures, 1/2 inch (12 mm) glass may be used.
- Applications: Often used in steam enclosures or designs requiring extra rigidity
- Options: Available in Low Iron, Acid Etched, Tinted, and Coated variants
- Considerations: May require additional or heavier hardware
5. Tinted Glass
Tinted glass, commonly available in smoke grey or medium grey, adds a unique aesthetic to shower designs.
- Thickness: Available in both 3/8 inch (10 mm) and 1/2 inch (12 mm)
- Cost: Typically 30% more than clear glass
- Features: Can be coated with AccuShield Protective Glass Coating
6. Specialty Glass
Specialty glass offers unique textures and designs for a personalized touch.
- Types: Acid Etch (Velour or Frosted), Reeded, Niagara, or Rain Glass
- Appearance: Opaque but allows significant light to pass through
- Cost: Custom-priced; some ornate designs can add up to 100% to the cost
- Cleaning: Acid Etched glass is harder to clean in shower applications
